Diagnosis

Nancy was diagnosed with stage IIIC ovarian epithelial cancer on Thursday, May 24 , 2007 during an exploratory surgery which turned into a full hysterectomoy with "optimal debulking." Stage IIIC describes any cancer that has spread into the peritoneal area in extensions larger than 2 cm (T3c, N0, M0). Or, the cancer has spread to the lymph nodes and/or pelvis but not to other parts of the body (any T, N1, M0). Her lymph nodes were clear but it had spread to two other locations. If you like reading surgeon reports, you can view the complete report and lab analysis of the tumors by clicking here.

The surgeon described it thusly: "She has a life threatening disease with an excellent prognosis given the appropriate chemical therapy." In other words, he got all the cancer but a rigid course of chemo is the only way to assure her survival.

He will follow the GOG 172 protocol which includes both IV and IP or intraperoteneal therapy. He installed the port in her abdomen during surgery to deliver the chemo directly to her abdomen. That all starts on Tuesday, June 26.

A good discussion of intraperitoneal chemical therapy.
A nurse's perspective - I found this to be the best explanation of the IP therapy.
